EDITORIAL: Haitian donations epic
The outpouring of donations from Central Texas, our state, our country and the world following the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti is nothing short of epic.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said last week $443 million has been received. The American Red Cross has committed $67 million and more response teams to this disaster than to any other single-nation incident in its history.
It has come in various ways, including tin-can collections at Walgreens; $10 texted donations; and pledges like that from Waco philanthropist Bernard Rapoport, who gave $10,000 to a relief campaign co-chaired by George W. Bush and B’s old pal, Bill Clinton. And local plastic surgeon Robert Gardere has set up a relief account at First National Bank of Central Texas.
Hope still thrives in this old world. Way to give, all.
