EDITORIAL: Fostering youth leadership
Hands together for University High School students who are banding together to enforce their own school’s dress code and giving the boot to drooping pants.
Not only have they shown great maturity in supporting campus leadership, but they have stepped forward to point out those who wear infractions. Finally, they have worked with administrators to come up with solutions for this problem.
This is the kind of new leadership we need. And this is the kind of new leadership that will make a difference for the next generation and other generations to come.
Well done, students.
Standing up to peers is one of life’s toughest tasks. But it builds character, and whether those around you admit it or not, it shows who the true leaders truly are.
At University High, these students are taking ownership of their campus and demonstrating they’ll tolerate no nonsense.
Those who aren’t serious about school — by wearing low-riding pants that bare their undergarments for all to see — are being singled out for their silliness.
The student council held assemblies recently for each grade level to inform them that sagging will no longer be tolerated.
Student violators are being given the opportunity to fix their clothing or have a change of clothes brought to them. Those who chose to do neither are sent to serve in-school suspension, away from others.
Visitors to the school tell the Trib that there is a feeling of pride permeating the campus and that students look great.
It’s great to see what a little self-respect can do for self -confidence.
We also congratulate the school’s administration for showing the leadership to allow students to participate in this process. Although there had been talk that a new dress code would be enacted — which would include no jeans — administrators abstained from taking these drastic actions. By not acting bosslike, they allowed students to take ownership of this situation. And they came to a compromise that all seem pleased with.
Way to keep the pants off the ground!
