EDITORIAL: Fine-tuning economic incentives worthy of our consideration
We’re reassured to hear thoughtful discussion by McLennan County commissioners this week on possible ways to fine-tune economic incentives for local businesses that expand in our county and new businesses settling here.
Some ideas we heard might well bear more discussion but were intriguing, including commissioner Kelly Snell’s suggestion that further incentives be given to businesses that use local contractors or subcontractors in expansions. And Lester Gibson inquired about the idea of incentives for businesses that bring jobs to areas of high employment, such as in his East Waco precinct.
We appreciate the open discussion, which arose as the court weighs an Economic Development Corp. grant for Caterpillar Inc.’s expansion.
We second the grant’s approval and urge city and county leaders to continue brainstorming.
