EDITORIAL: Deals with the devil?
As teams of international rescue workers stream into Haiti and the United States takes the lead to offer assistance following Tuesday’s deadly earthquake, we find it unconscionable for a TV preacher to tell viewers the island nation is “cursed.”
Former presidential candidate Pat Robertson told “The 700 Club” on Wednesday that centuries ago Haitians “got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. . . . Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other.’’
With possibly 50,000 feared dead, countless business and homes lost and a nation in ruins, have we no more compassion than to offer up this type of judgment? It harkens back to how we felt immediately following 9/11 when figures in other nations said we deserved what we got.
Thankfully, such sentiments aren’t shared by all.
