EDITORIAL: Championing the needy among us

Friday September 9, 2011

Before dawn Thursday, 300 community leaders and citizens assembled for a breakfast meeting to further encourage residents to help one another in these troubling times.

Led by Mission Waco executive director Jimmy Dorrell — whose tireless work with the area homeless has earned him a national reputation — participants were spurred on to continue service to others.

The first-ever Champions of Christian Service Breakfast, held at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, recognized an important element of society that often goes unnoticed. These “unsung heroes,” as Dorrell calls them, deliver meals to the hungry, take clothing to the needy and spread a message of hope in these unsettling times.

“This is an important day in our community,” said Grant Teaff, former Baylor University football coach and executive director of the American Football Coaches Association. “People are hurt and are suffering, and not only here but across our state.”

Nevertheless, many exhibit a humbling spirit of pride and aid their fellow citizens. They’re doing what is right despite ills.

Lady Bear basketball star player Melissa Jones told the crowd that her most valued memories aren’t on the court but occurred during three recent mission trips abroad. After her blinding eye injury suffered during a game last season, Jones admitted she questioned her future fate and said her dreams were squashed. But helping youth in poor countries helped her to view the world through a different lens. And it restored her hope.

Incidentally, she now plays volleyball for Baylor and says she’s looking forward to serving the community more.

That’s the kind of attitude we all need today as unemployment and other fiscal woes sock us hard.

Never give up the faith.
