EDITORIAL: Carol Dugat for City Council -- and a tip of the hat to Rev. Wilbert Austin

Monday April 26, 2010

One of the blessings of living in Waco is having more than one worthy candidate for political office to consider. And so it is with voters in City Council District 1, who will pick either the Rev. Wilbert Austin for another term on the Waco City Council or challenger Carol Dugat.

We favor Dugat because of her obvious zest for invigorating East Waco neighbors in the mission of doing better by that oft-overlooked part of the city. But there’s no denying that the Rev. Austin also has taken a keen interest in East Waco, the kind that goes to the very grass roots of a community.

Austin represents an old-fashioned sort of politician who personally goes into full gear to ensure that the lawns of poor oldsters are properly tended and that the funeral costs of the dead are covered when there’s no one to pay. He speaks with understandable pride of his efforts to battle crime in East Waco. The fact that he’s been threatened only seems to bolster that sentiment.

There’s no doubt East Waco residents owe a huge debt to this man, often overlooked for his time and efforts to help others.

That said, we ask voters to capitalize on the reverend’s good works and move on to the next step in this exciting saga over the river: rallying the community in ways that haven’t always been evident in East Waco and insisting that, even if investments and help come from elsewhere, East Wacoans ultimately lay the foundation for things to come. That’s part of Dugat’s platform of optimism, outreach and inclusiveness.

Austin has served admirably, but we believe the time has come in this particular juncture for bold, new leadership. We urge you to consider Dugat, who grew up in East Waco, worries about the neglect it has suffered over the years and now wants to set about changing that, once and for all.
