EDITORIAL: Cameron Park surveillance cameras a welcome sight

A proposal to rig video surveillance cameras throughout our beloved Cameron Park is welcomed news — especially after two unsolved rapes at the park this year.

We hope the units are up and running with utmost speed. We also hope that the system will be monitored live. Knowing that crimes are being watched and that officers will be quickly dispatched could definitely deter future criminal activity.

But we’re probably getting a bit ahead on this. The Parks and Recreation Department is in the funding stage and is procuring money for installation and purchase of the video surveillance cameras at the sprawling park.

Parks and Recreation Director Rusty Black told us money left over from year-end spending could be used to rig the park with a system for about $30,000.

The cost to monitor cameras is not yet factored in, Black said. But we strongly suggest it should be. Money spent on public safety is money well spent.

Keeping a watch on the 416-acre park is undoubtedly a daunting task. Mounted patrols and battery-operated cameras, currently in place, help. But video surveillance would allow more eyes on more places at more times.

Officials are mum on how many or where the cameras might be placed. And we concur with that. We shouldn’t tip off thugs who might damage equipment.

And even with cameras in place, we remind citizens to be wary and watch their backs — especially when off the beaten trails.
