EDITORIAL: Calling Washington — we have a war going on along our border
Violence and bloodshed resulting from drug cartel wars in Juarez and other border cities is hardly new, but the level of carnage is reaching proportions that should make all Texans uneasy. The feuds have claimed 4,700 lives in Juarez the past two years.
Americans have spent the past decade worrying about Muslim radicals and the jihad they have declared on our nation, our people and our allies. But is not the bloodshed, torture and killings we increasingly see in Juarez and other border cities yet another form of terrorism, meant to intimidate not only the people of a friendly ally but Americans just over the borderline?
Kudos to U.S. Sen. John Cornyn for putting aside what some might label Republican obstructionism to request a hearing of the U.S. Immigration, Refugees and Border Security Subcommittee as soon as possible to investigate the rising violence along our southern border. This comes after the recent murders of two U.S. citizens with ties to the American Consulate in Juarez.
Some Americans view all this as an exaggeration. But with our economies and cultures increasingly linked in all kinds of ways unimagined even 20 years ago, Texans know better. To ignore this situation as drug cartels branch out into U.S. territory while Mexico’s government struggles impotently against an enemy so ruthless, armed and well-organized is to invite a very different and deadly wave of new terrorism.
