EDITORIAL: Bridge to Somewhere
Wacoans with a sense of history will want to stop by the newly renovated Washington Avenue Bridge today for its 10 a.m. ribbon-cutting. Closed the past year and a half so it could be bolstered, the historic 109-year-old bridge now reopens to traffic — and this time two-way traffic, just as in the old days before structural deficiencies reduced it to one lane.
The $4.8 million renovation is hailed by Waco leaders as providing an easier flow of traffic down Elm Street, which all hope will invigorate business opportunities on the east side of the Brazos.
City officials tell us that the bridge — at 450 feet, the longest and oldest single-span truss traffic bridge in the United States — will open to all motorists today, then shut down Friday for spectators of the second TriWaco, the USA Triathlon-sanctioned event that will bring thousands to our town this busy weekend.
