EDITORIAL: Beloved baliff had a song in his heart, beans on his mind
Often in this space we pay homage to those successful in business and generous in charity. But some rate something more, even if it’s just for a song and a smile.
Such a person is Clarence Cobb, long known at the McLennan County Courthouse as the “singing baliff” for his habit of putting jurors at ease with his humor and penchant for breaking into “Butter Beans” — enough to make even Lady Justice smile.
If one needs evidence of the joy this 86-year-old World War II veteran spread, one had only to stray near that part of the courthouse where potential jurors gathered Monday, just two days after his death. As District Judge Ralph Strother told courthouse reporter Tommy Witherspoon, “Today there was no laughter, and it was very sad.”
We would all do well to add Cobb’s humor and whimsy to our daily lives.
