EDITORIAL: Baylor Kick Off Luncheon recognizes one of the Trib's very own — Hollis Biddle

The Kick Off Luncheon on Thursday at Baylor University’s Ferrell Center sponsored by the Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce and Baylor officially launched our community into this auspicious season that is football in Texas.

This is a glorious time for most of us. Tonight, the Friday night lights will blaze brightly at many high school stadiums throughout Central Texas. And next weekend, college football takes center stage as Baylor takes on Texas Christian University in what the gold and green hope is a redemption game following last year’s humbling loss. Hopefully, a win will then bring several more.

Here at the Tribune-Herald , we’re already celebrating. Besides dining with Baylor head football coach Art Briles on Thursday and hearing entertaining stories by former Baylor head coach Grant Teaff and former Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden, one of our very own — Hollis Biddle — was presented the prestigious Dave Campbell Award.

Campbell is a statewide sportswriting legend who worked at the Trib for 51 years. And to have him present this award to Biddle — who worked for the Trib for 55 years and retired in 2007 — makes us doubly proud.

Together, the duo in the 1950s started the popular Super Centex teams. Campbell went on to found the highly successful Texas Football magazine. Both have made names for themselves in Texas sports.

State Rep. Charles “Doc” Anderson told us that this award was well-deserved. He characterized Biddle as “a straight shooter when it comes to newspaper reporting.” We’ll second that.

Biddle, 76, humbly told us that he was grateful to the Trib “for providing us a platform to use our skills. The Trib was our launching pad.”

The pleasure was most certainly ours.
