EDITORIAL: And they re off!
Black Friday ordinarily reveals the fanaticism of some shoppers willing to wait in frigid temperatures before dawn, just to storm their favorite store to take advantage of sales featuring items they crave. Yet can we not all share in the unbridled joy this year?
Perhaps, at long last, it signals more confidence by American consumers.
The National Retail Federation reported an increase in Black Friday shopping of 8.7 percent over last year’s shopping rumble. That counts both those cramming into stores Friday as well as those doing their shopping with a series of computer clicks. What’s more, they report more income was spent on discretionary items such as electronics and jewelry.
In short, Black Friday is beginning to look a lot like Christmas to us. Let’s just hope merchants keep that momentum going through good service, smart sales and savvy marketing.
