EDITORIAL: A weekly recap of our thoughts, insights, opinions
For the benefit of Trib readers who may have missed some of this page’s offerings during the long work-a-day week, here’s a recap of the past week’s editorials:
* On Sunday we pleaded for balance in the teaching of our history as determined by the State Board of Education, especially concerning sensitive doctrines involving church and state. The subject is complex and every high school student deserves to know all sides of the arguments. The story is fascinating, so why slant the retelling of it?
* Monday we praised Waco Mayor Virginia DuPuy, who leaves office after five years. We’ll miss her grace, energy, inclusiveness and interest in bringing sparring parties together to talk compromise.
* Tuesday we welcomed Baylor University’s continuing efforts to cement its ties with Waco with the announcement that the Baylor School of Social Work will move into the old Wells Fargo building at 811 Washington Ave. downtown. Howdy, neighbors!
* Wednesday we saluted Secretary of Defense Robert Gates’ demand that Congress quit padding the military budget with programs the Pentagon doesn’t want or need. Building shoddy or unneeded arsenal just to maintain what are essentially taxpayer-funded job programs in the districts and states of lawmakers is outrageous when we have a national debt of nearly $13 trillion.
* Thursday we sought to rally community leaders to help address the costly, time-consuming burden facing local law enforcement who must transport mentally troubled individuals across the state to obtain treatment for them — a situation about to worsen as Waco’s psychiatric hospital cuts back on the number of beds it can provide. We favor the formation of a countywide crisis intervention team to which local law enforcement agencies contribute manpower or funds specifically targeting this problem.
* Friday we hailed the opening of Waco’s Animal Birth Control clinic in its newly built, roomier location at 3238 Clay Ave. in South Waco. This will allow it to better fulfill its mission of stanching the wave of unwanted dogs and cats in our area.
