EDITORIAL: A weekly recap: Mindful of inclusiveness

Saturday September 25, 2010

We had a week in Central Texas that was all about inclusiveness: geographically, politically and from the business segment.

* Sunday we heartily endorsed a new initiative put forth by the newly inaugurated Baylor University President Ken Starr to raise $100 million for student scholarships. It was an effort he declared critical and one that will require help from all of the Baylor family.

* Monday we welcomed to the city 120 women who are part of the prestigious Leadership Texas conference, which selected Waco as one of five Texas cities to visit to learn about economic development and other urban issues. We also gave a shout-out to La Vega Elementary School, which did Central Texas proud by earning the distinction being named a Blue Ribbon school by the U.S. Dept. of Education — one of only 300 schools nationwide to earn that honor for its academic performance.

* Tuesday we praised the success of the Waco Cultural Arts Festival, now in its seventh year. In particular we were impressed that the hands-on event straddled the Brazos River and offered activities on both sides of our city’s crown jewel.

* Wednesday we acknowledged that the massive BP oil spill is officially over. But the attention this catastrophe brought to light in housands of abandoned wells in the Gulf of Mexico that must be plugged. We also beseeched Time Warner to go carefully in moving or combining its public access channels. It’s their right to do so, but we hope it’s not to the exclusion of the public.

* Thursday we gave another shout-out to Ken Starr, who helped negotiate a peaceful exit for the University of Nebraska and the University of Colorado from the Big 12. We also praised the effort of Waco City Council to draw up a 10-year master plan that deals head-on with local poverty and we are hopeful that solutions will soon be at hand.

* Friday we lamented the likelihood that Texas voters will not benefit from a gubernatorial debate for the first time since 1990 because of an impasse by the state’s two major party candidates.
