EDITORIAL: A moment of rare unity when Rep. Giffords voted

Wednesday August 3, 2011

After weeks of demagoguery and mean-spiritedness exhibited by all political camps during deficit talks, a moment of great unity appeared Monday night when U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords cast her first vote in the U.S. House since being shot in January.

Her vote to raise the federal debt ceiling was part of a package that cuts spending by $2.1 trillion over 10 years. The bill (passed by both chambers this week and signed into law Tuesday) was historic. But her presence — after suffering a bullet to the head — made it epic.

“I can’t think of anything that is more special than to witness the return of our colleague who was the personification of courage, of sincerity and admiration throughout the country,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said as lawmakers hailed, cheered and congratulated Giffords.

Hopefully, this rare moment will remind elected leaders of the civility and decency that they should always embrace as they do our bidding.
