EDITORIAL: A little compassion for McGregor's 'cat lady'

McGregor always prided itself on its proximity to the ranch of then-President George W. Bush, so we’re glad to see city leaders displaying a little compassionate conservatism.

Specifically, we’re happy the city is seeking a way to ensure that retired teacher Kathryn Pace can remain in her formerly cat-infested home while the rights of neighbors, repulsed by the intense odor, are protected.

Yes, the 414th District Court ruled in favor of the city in its suit to evict the 72-year-old retired teacher and tear down her house because it smelled so bad.

But Mayor Jimmy Hering and others have forged a compromise that allows volunteers to help clean up her property and clear the way for city inspections.

Most of us feel for Pace’s plight — and city leaders are to be saluted for striking a path that correctly respects Pace’s neighbors but shows just compassion is alive and well here.
