EDITORIAL: A concise recap of our opinions and viewpoints from the past week
The work week may have been short, but local, state and national events offered us plenty of food for thought. A recap of opinions and views of the Tribune-Herald editorial board, including its newest member, publisher and longtime Central Texan Donnis Baggett:
* Sunday we encouraged Texans to pull on their boots and ready themselves for the 18th annual Cattle Baron’s Ball, a local, boot-scooting fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This year’s event, set for June 12, has as its honorary chairman Dr. Bradford Holland, a cancer survivor. The event has raised $5.5 million since the first ball in 1991.
* On Memorial Day, we asked readers enjoying the holiday to never forget to ask themselves, in all they say and do: Are you truly worthy of those putting their lives on the line for you? Such an admonition might make us all think more about how we behave and act, especially in wartime.
* Tuesday we welcomed Ken Starr to his first day as the new president of Baylor University and offered advice: Get to know Waco’s leaders (we listed some), bolster outreach efforts by the Baylor Network, and be careful of other obligations you might have beyond campus. The presidency of Baylor will prove all-consuming.
* Wednesday we encouraged President Obama to rethink his moratorium on deepwater offshore drilling and instead embrace regulation and enforcement as proper tools to restrain bad practices in the oil industry.
* Thursday we expressed surprise and satisfaction at the high quality of candidates seeking to succeed Jim Bush as District 5 representative on the Waco City Council. Most boasted resumes showing considerable public service. They make us proud.
* Friday we urged taxpayers to calm themselves about reports of Waco Independent School District educators attending a professional development seminar in Las Vegas, even as we saluted the school board for eyeing such expenditures. Vegas is more than just gambling — it’s one of the top sites in the nation for conventions, seminars and meetings. So let’s not jump to conclusions.
