Gordon Robinson: Making a great newspaper, serving a great community

GORDON ROBINSON Robinson Media

Sunday August 2, 2009

This is the second edition — and the first Sunday edition — of the Waco Tribune-Herald under the ownership of the Robinson family.

In Saturday’s newspaper, my father Clifton Robinson, chairman and chief executive officer of Robinson Media, provided some insight into the future of your community newspaper.

I’d like to add to that vision.

For generations, this community has relied on the Waco Tribune-Herald as a trusted news source.

Under the control and management of the Robinsons, you can expect the same quality newspaper, because it’s what this community deserves.

Whatever the news — world, national, state or local — you can expect a comprehensive overview of the events of the day, reported and written in a fair and objective manner.

You can also expect a little variety. We intend to keep the staples of a good newspaper such as the comics, a daily crossword puzzle, other types of puzzles and as comprehensive a television grid as possible.

But we also want to have some fun. One of our objectives is to search out and publish humorous human-interest stories written in a manner that our readers can look forward to reading. Humor, after all, is food for our souls.

Perhaps one of the first changes you will notice will be on our award-winning opinion page.

A newspaper’s opinion page has often been described as the soul of the newspaper, and we intend to keep it that way.

Generations of Trib readers have not only been kept informed of the day’s news through our product, they have also used our opinion page as a place to find well-reasoned, informed discussions about the meaning of the day’s events.

We appreciate the importance of being a community’s sounding board, and we intend to honor that importance by being respectful of all voices and opinions.

The biggest imprint that my father and I can have on this newspaper will not come on the news page, but on our opinion page.

Toward that end, we intend to champion more conservative views in our unsigned editorials, and we intend to ferret out more conservative voices in our columns.

We pursue this policy based on our belief that such views represent a broader swath of Central Texas readers — and are a bedrock of our own viewpoints.

We intend to remain a gathering spot for all voices. We understand that a vibrant democracy must include vibrant debate.

We also intend to make this page a forum for respectful debate based on a deeper understanding and a more profound dialogue of the day’s events — and not on name-calling.

We vow to respect the opinions of all our columnists and, most important, the opinions of those who write letters to the editor.

Ultimately, we intend to maintain the Trib tradition of using the opinion page as a place to provoke thought and to be a marketplace for ideas and dissenting views.

Beyond the opinion page, we look forward to a Trib advertising department that will continue to deliver the best value for your money.

Our daily readership exceeds 100,000, and our weekly reach penetrates 70 percent of the local population.

We believe such reach is unmatched anywhere in the Waco region.

Searching for ways to become more connected with our community through technology and old-fashioned networking, so that we can deliver value to readers and advertisers, will become our primary mission.

Throughout this process, I expect that we will stumble occasionally as we learn this dynamic business.

We hope you will remain patient with us and give us constructive feedback to help us grow.

Together, we can work to consistently deliver what every great city in this country has: a great local newspaper.

We’re excited about our vision. But we’re mindful that this newspaper belongs to you as much as it belongs to us.
