Weekly recap of opinions, thoughts and viewpoints
The Tribune-Herald editorial board this week gave up on any imminent setting of a for-sure primary election date and began interviewing equally astonished candidates on issues.
* Sunday we applauded a proposal by two local architects to press the stately, 62-year-old Memorial Masonic Grand Lodge Temple into part-time duty as a performing arts center, rendering a worthy cornerstone in a viable downtown arts district.
* Monday we hailed a vote by the Carter BloodCare board to build a new center. This will consolidate three smaller local facilities into one for better efficiency of collection and disbursement of blood.
* Tuesday we suggested nonprofts, businesses, even politicians consider how failure to fully articulate policy changes can lead to public relations disasters like that involving the Komen for the Cure foundation.
* Thursday we congratulated Mission Waco executive director Jimmy Dorrell and wife Janet for two decades of battling poverty here at home and abroad.
* Friday we acknowledged Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce President Jim Vaughan’s many accomplishments as he announced his retirement, including his urging that we capitalize on our picturesque riverfront in developing downtown.
* Our Letter of the Week comes M.L. Perry of Hewitt, commenting on sometimes boisterous restaurants and taverns downtown and loft living upstairs: “Leadership and citizenry of this city talk incessantly about revitalizing downtown, but it is apparent they either don’t know what a vibrant downtown is or they think they can control the level of vibrancy. A downtown is either revitalized and vibrant or it is not.”
* Our Quote of the Week is allegedly attributed to Hill County Sheriff Jeffrey Lyon by several employees who claim he made the following remark while zipping and unzipping his pants: “Who wants a promotion?” Lyon said in a brief email such accusations amount to “dirty politics.” He faces three opponents in the Republican primary election — whenever that is.
