Ted Nugent: Terrorists who drink and drive
Face of DWI is horrific; this means you, Paris darling

Sunday, June 24, 2007

Suzie was all smiles, as happy as a teenage American could be. Graduation day was everything she had dreamed of. Friends, family and fellow students had celebrated with a glorious bash, a sea of laughter, BBQ fun all around, with big ideas and optimism for a bright future.

She had put her heart and soul into being the best student she could possibly be. Mom and Dad and Grandma and Grandpa had always been there to love, nurture, guide, discipline and communicate as a loving family should.

Hence, she knew how to pick quality friends and avoid the "peer pressure" lie. She knew to dig in, work and study hard, and take good care of herself so she could live her American Dream to its fullest.

She had big plans and couldn't wait for the next chapter in this amazing gift of life.

Johnny was feeling exactly the same. Life was good. High school was survived and exciting new unlimited adventures beckoned. Surely, it was time to party.

Unfortunately, Johnny put his otherwise well-developed brain on standby, abandoned all he had been taught about responsible behavior, dropped his guard and fell for the imbecilic lie that partying included irresponsible, deadly behavior.

So Johnny tied one on, had a few beers and decided to drive home.

Then Johnny lost control of his car in a drunken cloud and smashed into Suzie's car in a cloud of dust and flame.

Seriously burned and disfigured beyond description, Suzie now undergoes nonstop surgery, skin grafts, painful treatments and pure hell on earth.

She is blind. Her once-beautiful face and body are a singed cinder. Her mutilated limbs are useless.

Her agonized parents have dedicated every minute of every day to moving her about, feeding and washing and handling her most basic life support procedures.

And why? Because fools like Johnny think that drunk driving is OK. It's cool. Getting drunk and acting like an idiot is fun. Until you destroy someone's life, that is.

Now Johnny can't think straight, tortured constantly by the knowledge that his momentary lapse in consciousness ruined a fine young lady's life, for no reason whatsoever.

Suzie and Johnny are real. And that brings us to Paris Hilton, finally jailed for DWI.

I'm glad the media have put her punk little over-painted, spoiled-rotten ass on TV and everywhere we look.

Unfortunately, it is mostly for all the wrong reasons.

If I were in charge, on first offense she and every other DWI punk would go to jail for a year, caged in the worst conditions possible.

Second offense, five years. Third, life with no parole.

Lock 'em up. Get 'em off the streets.

For, you see, drunk drivers make the Taliban and al-Qaida happy, because they kill innocent Americans and ruin lives every damn day in this country. Anyone who makes terrorists happy are simply terrorists as far as I'm concerned.

How so many Americans can be so cruel and rotten toward their fellow Americans is beyond comprehension. There simply is no excuse. The writing is on the wall, in big, black, bold letters: DRINKING AND DRIVING DESTROYS AMERICAN FAMILES. Case closed.

But the menace is not confined to the drunks destroying innocent lives. It is anybody and everybody who sees it happening and fails to demand a stop to it.

Get in their faces. Take away their keys. Let them know they are low-life, murderous punks who are wrecking lives all in the name of drunken, chimp-like misbehavior.

This is war, my friends. War against heartless slobs who don't give a good damn about the slaughter by drunken drivers.

If you care, let us demand an end to it. Let us blow the whistles and scold and ridicule and condemn the punks till they stop.

It is a matter of life and death and I for one have had all I can take. Contact your local MADD chapter and let's make America better ASAP.

Ted Nugent is a Waco-based musician and television-show host.

Ted Nugent's passion for hunting and killing animals infuriates me. However, he would be a great Secretary of Defense because he is tough on crime and vigiliant in reference to National Security. A talented guitarist, showman and patriot- but Ted has it wrong in reference to animal welfare. Take it out on human terrorists TED !

I agree whole-heartedly with Ted, except I believe first time DWI with fatality should be as in South America, death penalty.

Non-fatality---Life in prison, without parole.

++This settles it as far as I am concerned. ++

It figures as much.

Donna, why don't you look on dictionary.com for terrorist. ++2. a person who terrorizes or frightens others.++ If you don't think drunk drivers are frightening then you don't think. This settles it as far as I am concerned. Get a life as an English teacher and maybe you can grade papers for someone who cares. Maybe you can teach English as a second language with your superior grasp of the dictionary. Drunk drivers are terrorists, get over it and tell Mom and Dad to stop drunk driving.

++Donna, the only thing I note about this post of your's and all your others, is negative thoughts without providing and alternative. ++

Gary,

I'm sorry? I need to provide a vocabulary lesson for someone who is writing an opinion piece regularly for a local paper? What is it with you people? There isn't a negative thought here. What it is is telling a writer he's using the wrong word. As far as an "alternative" goes, just pick up Roget's Thesaurus. There are plenty of alternatives listed.

++I read that you really have no opinion of your own, only criticism of other people's. ++

Like I said, you obviously have a reading comprehension problem. And by having a comment section, the Trib is obviously opening up the forum to just that...comments. My comment is that Ted is using the wrong word. It's not an opinion, it's a fact.

++At least they are willing to express their's. The only use you have for the dictionary is to try to point out mistakes people make. Calling drunk drivers terrorists is a totally acceptable analogy. What would you call drunk drivers, Mom, Dad?++++

No Gary. It's not acceptable. It's not expressing an "opinion." It's called redefining words. It has nothing to do with "opinion." I know this is apparently something you don't grasp well, but that's what it is and you do need to work at it to understand it because it is important.

I'm old enough to remember the scene in the parking lot of a Ted Nugent concert. If we had locked up all the people who use and drive I really doubt there would have been many people left to buy tickets. I agree we need to have harsher penalties for people who abuse but we also need to have more comprehensive and stringent rehabilitation programs as well.

++To Donna, yea I see why you disagree with Ted, you probably call the drunk drivers in your life Mom and Dad. Having any sort of compassion for drunk drivers is weird, why care about someone who cares about no one else? What would you call them? Maybe honey or sweetie?++

Gary,

The only thing I can think of is that you don't read well. I didn't say one word about compassion for drunk drivers. I didn't say I cared about them. I didn't say I would call them "honey or sweetie." I didn't say I dissagreed with the meat of Ted's column.

I said that the word "terrorist" has specific meaning and it's not applicable to drunk drivers. I'm sorry you're having difficulty with this, but words do have meaning...it's one reason there are dictionaries. I suggest you become acquainted with one as soon as possible.

After you get used to using your dictionary, then you can trot right back here and we can discuss reading comprehension.

Ted,
I agree. DUI Laws should be stiffer. All it takes is one incident. One mishap to cause a fatality. You can't bring a person or a family back once they are gone and to think that a fine or probation or even a short jail term should even be considered sufficient is ridiculous. First offense should be fines of $25K with 1 year in jail if no fatality, $100K with 5 yrs with fatality (minimum). Sentences to increase doubling with second offense. Third offense (Habitual Offender) $500K fine 15 years no fatality. With Fatality (Life without parole).
With regards to Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie; their celebrity is the way it is only because we as a society make them that way, by way of news, magazines and other various tabloid media. We buy the trash rags because we are supposedly interested in what these "Socialites" is doing or who they are doing it to this week or month. Personally, I could really care less and if more people paid less attention to what these prissy little spoiled rich brats did, they would have no celebrity at all. Hilton's arrest would probably have had no media attention and it certainly wouldn't have been considered as "Breaking News" on Fox News preemping the Iraq conflict. Of course, that's just my opinion, but I could be wrong.
