Thirty-six years ago, Cox Enterprises announced the purchase of the Waco Tribune-Herald from the Harlon Fentress family. A new era was born, and as with any new era, great debates have been inspired due to opinions expressed by various publishers.
Cox Enterprises has well served the broad Waco community — brought the news into the new century — and its legacy will long endure. The Fentress family owned and operated the Trib for 50 years before the Cox sale. Its long and successful ownership was created by honest and fair reporting, expressing opinions on hot issues generally homogenous with the opinions of readers in the universe it served. The Fentress family is and forever will be remembered for its service to our community.
This is the first edition of the Trib under the ownership of the Clifton Robinson family. The new experience of newspaper ownership is exhilarating, exciting and entered into with certain trepidation, remembering quotes of “Stick with what you know” and “Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.”
The Robinson family has lived in the Waco area since shortly after the Civil War. Our early business interests involved general stores, rentals, farming and insurance. Current interests include insurance, investments and real estate. Philanthropy is also an important mission, supporting animal rescue, civic projects, scholarships, McLennan Community College and Baylor University.
The newspaper business is currently undergoing what can best be described as the perfect storm: The failing U.S. economic conditions coupled with the digital age have caused advertising revenues and subscriptions to decrease.
Change is the byword of our modern society, and such is the case of the Trib. It’s time for a change, and hopefully our values and opinions will be well received by our advertisers and readers. It will come about slowly but surely with the first change being printed on this paper’s front page, where it will remain during the tenure of our ownership: In God we trust.
The question most often asked is, “why would anyone want to own a newspaper in these times?” Our simple answer is that our entire success has been in operating out-of-favor businesses. The Waco Tribune-Herald is far and away the most trusted news source in Central Texas and needs local ownership and tweaking as it moves into a new age. Newspapers as we presently know them will survive long into the future, during which time they will be integrated gradually into the digital age.
Our mission is to offer a community news service dedicated to truth, honor and integrity, and to this mission, we will not fail.

I live in Kansas City, but am a Texan by birth and have many family members living in Waco. My dear mother told me about the Robinson famiy acquistion of the Tribune-Herald just this morning, so I had to visit the site.
This is awesome news and a testimony that people are hungry for factual journalism rather than left-leaning propaganda. I wish the KC Star would become locally owned and operated. Like many large newspapers, the Star is on their last leg financially because of their biased reporting. They are nothing more than water-carriers for left and educated citizens are aware of that. They continue to twist the facts at their own peril.
To the folks who do not like God being acknowledged in the paper, the answer is simple...don't read it. The Tribune-Herald will probably gain more readers than it will lose for doing so. If the Star took the same position, I might consider subscribing again.
Wishing great success for the Robinson family and the Tribune-Herald!

I can honestly say, I just noticed the typical attempt to force your beliefs on everyone around you, that is so common among x-tians, that you placed on the front of the paper. Just thought I'd remind you a newspaper is called a NEWSpaper because it is supposed to have NEWS not religious views.
Just my oppinion, and to add to it, I'll be canceling my subscription to your ex-NEWSpaper. I'll just use the Austin or Dallas paper. Since, it's an Austin paper now anyways.
Remember, Freedom of religion means all religions, and freedom FROM religion as well.

Oh, Keith, your comment was so profound. Can I use it? I am being facetious, as you know. Trusting is God is one thing. Walking in God's will is quite another! In my lifes' observation, it seems the ones who scream for attention from the highest tower or in crowded places about how religious they are, are often the most selfish, mean spirited and hard hearted when it comes to the poor, the weak, the afflicted, the other sinner. They do lots of judging but they get really upset when someone points at them. They often defend the polluter in direct contradiction of Jesus's "stewardship principle". The militant "pro lifers" screech about abortion but too often they are pro birth, not necessarily pro the life of the one they forced out of the frying pan and into the fire. In other words, they don't want to adopt the AIDS baby, the deformed baby, the brain damaged baby, the minority baby. No, the want the pure white, perfectly healthy baby. Surely God is not impressed with that. Often they want to make symbolic gestures about the location of the Ten Commandments to gain God's and man's praise but they live as if they have never read it. I am sure God is not impressed and He has said so in His Bible many times. Way too often they want to cram their religious dogma down the throats of their fellow citizens via the law of the land or by fear, cajolery, power, bribery, promised friendship, etc. Again, God doesn't need us, we need him. We can't help Him. He helps us. He does not need the state's help. He want us, not the state--which is of the earth--to do the work. His kingdom has no borders and He is always where He wants to be whether some do or don't want him to be there. He is there in the heart and soul of the ones who are there, wherever they may be. Way too often religionists are rabid nationalists. That is anathema to the Jesus of the New Testament who talked about the four corners of the earth, the universal brotherhood of man, the Fatherhood of God. What's worse is that the religionists spend way too much effort talking about things Jesus never or rarely mentioned (gays, abortion, sex, etc.) and they never seem to want to talk about the things Jesus emphasized: humility, serving the poor, the weak, the sick, the naked, the homeless, stewardship, justice, mercy, etc. THESE ARE MY OBSERVATIONS AS A FELLOW CHRISTIAN. THESE ARE NOT JUDGEMENTS OF ANY INDIVIDUAL! God attends to sin. The state attends to crime. Hypocrisy is the realm of those who live under the aegis of "...do as I say, not as I do!" I am guilty of that too and I am sure God is no more impressed with me than He is any man; even the best man! But I do where First John 1:9 is.

I have to say that its good to get some new management in the trib. But did you really have to lay off all of those hard workers in the production department. I know a few of those workers and they really had goals to do things for the trib. I dont see how moving it to austin to print is gonna be any better exept for being cheap people and not wanting to pay workers who can actually get the paper out on time. Instead of 9 to noon everyday. Yall need to rethink your priorities here. I have half a mind to cancel my subscription.

I applaud the Robinson family for using the motto "In God we Trust." I am a professional journalist myself and firmly believe that this business will prosper because Mr. Robinson is depending on the ONE who owns all, gives all and blesses all. If not for our creator, nothing on this earth would be possible. An example of faith-based prosperity is the owner of Chick-Fil-A. His stores do not open on Sunday and his business prospers. The reason? In God he trusts. In God we should all trust.

KDF, I am sorry you have a terminal condition. I am glad you have a positive attitude and that you devote with your wife every morning and evening. I am a Christian as well; not the best; not the worst; just trying and failing and rebounding. I hope and pray that you will be fine but we both know that you will be fine in eternity no matter what because of God's grace. All of that said, God does not need our help; we all need His. And that was and remains the point of my comments. God doesn't ask us to impose our faith on others in any form, personally or publicly, in newspapers, placement of religious icons or through legislation. He asks for our humility and love for our neighbors as for ourselves regardless of ethnicity, nationality, looks, personality, health, financial condition, et al. So, as I have said, you can email me anytime--not for the purpose of argument--but simply one man discussing life, issues & eternity with another. That doesn't mean we have to agree on this or that but exchanges of ideas can illuminate us all.

The saddest things is that these two men are two wannabe cowboys who know nothing about the newspaper industry, bought themselves a giant toy, and are now playing with the livelihoods of that newspaper's employees and their families.
"Fools rush in..." says one of the Dynamic Duo. Really? Well, you did just that, making change for change's sake. Really, you added a motto? For what reason? To what end? So you could put your egotistical stamp and/or your brazen religious belief on it. Whatever happened to "hiding your light under a bushel"?
In a few years, these two wannabes will either run the paper into financial oblivion, and you'll receive the Dallas Morning News or the Austin American-Statesman, or they will have ruined it beyond repair, filling it with their own follies, and sell it at a loss to some media company after so many employees' lives will have been ruined.
But hey ý you all got your four words on there, right? Good for you.

I don't care to personally email anyone on this blog for the sake of argument. What does sadden me, harleyj, is that I am a God fearing Christian who devotes with my wife in the morning and evening. Most of my friends are Christians, and the ones who are not often comment on my positive attitude and commend me for it. Those are folks God gives to me to witness to, not only with words, but with seeds of His Word. Matthew 5:16 helps coordinate my life, and Romans 10:9 is posted on most of my emails. Currently, I have a terminal condition that makes me want to bless and thank God every day. So forgive me, harleyj. God always does simply because I ask him to. <

Poor fearful KDF. And, by the way, that was/is my real email address. Give it a shot and you will see. Unlike you, I am not full of it! Ever heard the phrase, "son of a buck"? Your little mind assumes the worst and that says more about you than it does about me! Call Rev(?) Hagee and have him snap his fingers and pray for you!
