Editorial: Shinier Lion's Park

Wednesday, June 24, 2009

It’s not Six Flags over Texas. In many ways it’s better. Meaning: If parents of small children want a low-cost family outing that doesn’t take a tank of gas, Lions Park is the ticket. Add go-karts and Putt-Putt, and the park has been a go-to-staple for families for decades.

The amusement complex is an incalculable blessing for Waco, and firmly implanted in many memories.

The sight of the little train chugging smiling families around Lions Park is one of Waco’s most refreshing and reassuring.

Understandably, over time the park has shown wear and weathering. It is exciting, then, to hear that organizers have made several key improvements and plan more, ranging from a facelift for the carousel to the speed of the super slide. It would be great for supporters to come to the Lions’ aid in this effort, as they have done so much for kids.

Lion's Park was great in my day. It was brand new and the Super Slide was the way to go. We used to putt-putt and use the swimming pool. There was even a McDonald's there, but not the chain, but locally owned by Mr. McDonald. Great burgers and fries and other food I have forgotten. Never got to ride the train, but my nephew has -- over and over. One day I'm gonna get me a ride on that thing!! :)

I'm glad to hear that Lion's Park is being spruced up. It's a great place. What would make it better is the return of the swimming pool. It's crazy for a city the size of Waco not to have a public pool. City fathers/mothers, couldn't you help the Lions make that happen?
