Herbert Stoetzner

Dec. 10, 1926 - Feb. 23, 2018

Herbert Thomas Stoetzner, 91, years old, passed away February 23, 2018, after a brief traumatic illness. His beloved wife of 68 years, Eleanor, died just two months ago. Herb was the only child of Louise M. Ehlers and Thomas Joseph Stoetzner. He was born December 10, 1926 in Staten Island, New York. While growing up and attending school, he worked a variety of jobs, including as a pharmacist apprentice, to help his small family.

He met the love of his life, Eleanor, in 1947, while they were on a double date with other people! Herb knew Eleanor was 'the one' and boldly tried to ask her out before the dates ended that night. They were engaged Christmas Eve, 1947, before Midnight Mass and were married April 23, 1949.Eleanor and Herb raised their three children, Thomas Arthur, Nancy Jean, and Ellen Mary in New Jersey then in Hudson, New York; while Herb's career as an accountant blossomed for United States Steel, Cement Division. Herb also attended Pace College of New York. In 1963, he was promoted to manager of accounting of US Steel's Cement Division in Waco, Texas, where the family moved. Herb was instrumental in the Waco plant's development and expansion, including construction of another plant.

With the support of his loving wife, Herb was promoted again to Regional Director of Finance for US Steel's Cement Division which was eventually acquired by Lehigh Portland Cement. Herb retired in 1988, and Herb and Eleanor took off on many worldwide traveling adventures. Herb also managed to fit in a round (or two!) of golf through the years. Both Eleanor and Herb also spent many years volunteering and served Meals on Wheels together. Herb was a Providence Hospital volunteer for almost 15 years. As Eleanor's health declined, he took care of her at home until her death this past December.

Herb and Eleanor were the proud parents to their son, Tom, who preceded them in death four years ago, and his widow, Patti Lou Stoetzner, their daughter, Nancy and husband, Doyle William Kupper, and their youngest, Ellen Stoetzner Duke. They were delighted by their grandchildren, Jacob Thomas Stoetzner and wife, Kelli, Ashley Katel Stoetzner, Diana Duke and husband, Alex Plumb, Captain Kelley Duke Lovely and husband, LT Alex Lovely, Phillip Thomas Kupper and wife, Amanda, LT Adrienne Duke and Haley Ehlers Duke. They were also blessed to have three great-grandchildren, Cooper, Parker, and Greyson Stoetzner.

Mass and Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 17, on St. Patrick Day, at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis, Texas, where the couple's ashes will be buried beside their son's grave. Their family and friends will gather to celebrate the couple's long lives and many beautiful memories, especially of Herb and Eleanor dancing the lindy together.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Providence Hospice of Waco, Texas.

Herb and I worked together as volunteers in Outpatient Services at Providence Hospital. There are so many wonderful memories and stories. He loved to talk and talk he did.....about his amazing family, the love of his life, Eleanor, and golf. We both played although we never had a chance to play together. We entered the Masters lotto and afterwards would commensurate when our names were not chosen. We talked on the phone and shared the latest news. I will miss his unique voice and personality. You are blessed to have had Herb for so many wonderful years. Elaine Winniford

This is so kind, Mrs. Winnifred and will share with rest of the family. He spoke of ‘Elaine’ often and how much he enjoyed volunteering with you and your talks (sure loved talking as you know!). Thanks for sharing. Blessings, Ellen (Stoetzner Duke)
