South Waco then and now
By Terri Jo Ryan - Tribune-Herald staff writer
When Baylor University’s student population began to boom in the years following World War II, the school needed room to grow on. It found the land in the surrounding South Waco neighborhood.
Some of the vanished sites were recalled at a recent Waco History Project event. Presenters from the Waco History Project and the Baylor University Institute for Oral History shared a “then and now” slide show, some of which is re-created on this page. Participants reminisced about recreational venues such as Edgefield Park, which Baylor transformed into intramural sports fields, and Taborian Park.
As part of its continuing mission to collect the stories of historic neighborhoods of Waco, the Baylor Institute for Oral History is looking for residents of Old South Waco who will share their tales, photos and artifacts. To participate, contact Lois Myers at lois_myers@baylor.edu or 710-3437.
