More East Waco memories
By Terri Jo Ryan
Tribune-Herald staff writer
East Waco is known today as a predominantly black part of town, a hub for black business, educational and cultural life for many decades. But from the city’s founding and through World War II, East Waco was all-white from the banks of the Brazos River to Garrison Street.
Starting at Garrison — site of the oldest all-black academy west of the Mississippi, Paul Quinn College — and going toward the outskirts of town, East Waco was all-black.
Doug Brown, 64, a white businessman who grew up near there, collects images of old East Waco and is an avid neighborhood historian. Brazos Past will feature more of his photo collection in coming weeks.
