Can you help identify the mystery bands?
By Terri Jo RyanSpecial to the Tribune-Herald
“I Love a Mystery” was the name of an radio drama of the early 1940s, but it could also be the name of a column for Brazos Past. That’s because in the hunt for fascinating stories about Waco’s history, at times we run across some unusual photos with no associated background materials.
So today, we present some photos from the heyday of the “hillbilly bands” of yesteryear — the 1930s to 1950s — in the hopes that readers may recognize some of these ensembles and help us identify the musicians and singers.
While the hit movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which starred George Clooney, resulted in a popular revival of hillbilly music in 2000, these local photos have us asking, “O brothers, who art thou?”
If you have a clue, drop me a line at tjryan@wacotrib.com, or call 757-5746 and leave a message and a way to get back to you.
