Brazos Past: The 1960-1961 Baylor Bears basketball team
By Terri Jo Ryan

The sporting images featured here today were taken by Billy C. Loden, now of Lorena, as homework assignments while he was in college. The Waco native took two photojournalism classes at Baylor University in 1960, and the men’s basketball team captured his fancy.
The 1960-61 season was the last coached by Bill Henderson, who had an overall record of 203 wins and 239 losses. He started coaching for Baylor in 1941 through 1943, but was replaced for a season and a half by Van Sweet. His first full season back at the helm, 1945-46, Henderson took the team all the way to the NCAA Tournament, where Baylor emerged as Southwest Conference Champions.
The ‘60-61 team won only four of its 24 games that year, and Henderson was replaced the following season by Bill Menefee, who coached from 1961 through 1973.
Baylor’s current crop of men’s hoop stars began practicing Friday in preparation for an exhibition game Nov. 8 against Tarleton State University, and the start of the regular season on Nov. 15.
