Brazos Past: Prom nights to remember
By Terri Jo Ryan - Tribune-Herald staff writer
Modern-day proms are elaborate affairs, dominated by designer dresses, stylish tuxes, fancy stretch limos and expensive flowers. Teens spend months planning, prepping and primping for the all-important social occasion. Modeled after debutante balls, proms at the dawn of the 20th century were far simpler affairs than today’s grand soirees. Youths donned their Sunday best to dine on modest fare and perhaps dance with classmates. But in the decades after World War II, with an increasingly affluent middle class, the prom moved from the high school gymnasium to the hotel ballroom or country club banquet hall. The competition to outshine one’s classmates with the best dress or best date started to sizzle. For a glimpse at this year’s local proms, be sure to check out our slide shows on wacotrib.com.
