Waco has been described as one of the most “churched” cities in America, with an astounding array of sanctuaries and sacred spaces located in town and throughout the Heart of Texas.

For example, the greater Waco area has more than 140 Baptist churches alone and more than 400 churches total, according to a rough count through the area’s telephone directories.

Waco’s church history began shortly after the town’s founding in 1849. The first church in Waco Village was a log cabin that Methodists built by the Brazos River in 1850. The congregation’s leader allowed Baptists, Lutherans and Presbyterians to use the meeting house for their services as well.
