The creators of the “God is Big Enough” wristband campaign will deliver sermons five times this weekend at First United Methodist Church of Waco.

Steve Ramsdell, 58, is pastor of the church. In fall 2010, the church celebrated its 160th anniversary, which included the creation of white wristbands with red-and-blue lettering that said “God is Big Enough.”

Steve Ramsdell’s twin brother, Mike Ramsdell, borrowed the idea for a campaign at First United Methodist Church of Mansfield, where he serves as pastor. His church began passing out the bracelets on Christmas Eve of 2010.

At first, the Waco church ordered 1,500 of the bracelets, which are designed by Mary Meadows, director of communications and evangelism. But their popularity exploded and the church needed additional orders.

WFAA-TV in Dallas recently aired a story about how the 6,000-member Mansfield congregation is reaching thousands of people through the wristbands. WENS-TV in San Antonio picked up the story.

Waco-area residents gave former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican candidate for vice president, a wristband on her visit to Waco. She has been seen wearing it at other locations.

Former President George W. Bush received a wristband on his book-signing stop at Central Texas Marketplace. Members of Baylor University men’s and women’s basketball teams also have received them.

Meanwhile, the Mansfield church has distributed the wristbands in Rwanda, Kenya and Zimbabwe as part of mission programs in those African nations.

Additional wristbands have been distributed in Peri, Haiti, China, Honduras, Afghanistan and Iraq. Estimates now place the total number circulated at 200,000.

Overwhelmed with requests, Steve Mansfield is referring organizations to the supplier through the website at www.godisbigenough.us.

The site contains discussions of the sermon series that the Ramsdells used to launch the promotion.

Today’s service begins at 5:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center, 4901 Cobbs Drive.

Other services are scheduled at 8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 10:50 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
