A 36-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run crash Monday night in Bellmead, leaving police searching for the suspect vehicle, authorities said.

Jana McElyea was hit by an unknown car near the intersection of New Dallas Highway and Montrose Street about 9:15 p.m., Bellmead police Sgt. Kory Martin stated in a press release

Emergency responders arrived at the intersection and found McElyea suffering from severe injuries.

Martin stated McElyea was taken to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

The driver involved in the crash left the intersection before police arrived, Martin said. No information or description of the driver was available Tuesday morning.

McElyea’s husband, Leon Mc Elyea, said they were married in August 2011 and he is devastated by the loss of his wife. He said Jana McElyea has a 16-year-old daughter, and he has a 13-year-old son from previous relationships.

“My soul mate was taken from me, (and) some people go their whole life searching for theirs,” Leon McElyea said. “I know accidents happen, but it wasn’t an accident for whoever did this to keep driving. My world will never be the same.”

Anyone with further information about the fatal hit-and-run crash is asked to call the Bellmead Police Department at 799-0251.
