A woman who was struck by a car while operating a motorized wheelchair Monday afternoon died from injuries suffered in the crash, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Wednesday.

Sherry Lynn Wood, 63, of Waco, was hit by a car driving north on 19th Street near the intersection of 19th and Park Lake Drive, Swanton said.

Swanton said Wood was thrown from her motorized the scooter after she drove through the H-E-B parking lot north of the intersection. The car traveled north on 19th Street through the intersection with a green light when Wood came into the path of the car and the car clipped the scooter, Swanton said.

Wood was taken to a local hospital with a hip fracture and bleeding from a head injury, he said. Emergency responders initially told police the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, but Wood later died at the hospital, Swanton said.

McLennan County Justice of the Peace W.H. “Pete” Peterson pronounced Wood dead at the hospital. Peterson said he did not request an autopsy.

Swanton said no citations or arrests were made at the time of the crash. He said the crash remains under investigation.
