A 32-year-old man was arrested Thursday morning after he allegedly ran a red light in West Waco and struck and injured a motorcyclist, then left the scene without stopping, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

A motorcyclist near the 7-Eleven convenience store at the intersection of State Highway 6 and U.S. Highway 84 was hit and injured when Sergio Almanza-Martinez, of Waco, ran a red light in his truck, Swanton said. Police were called to the intersection shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, he said.

First responders arrived and transported the motorcyclist to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center. Swanton said the motorcyclist was talking with police when he was taken to the hospital.

Almanza-Martinez did not stop after the crash, Swanton said. A witness followed him and alerted police to his location shortly after the crash, Swanton said.

Police arrested Almanza-Martinez on a third-degree felony charge of causing an accident with injury.

He remained in McLennan County Jail on Thursday evening. Bond information was not immediately available.
