A man shot by his younger brother in an East Waco home in mid-April died in a local hospital Wednesday night, authorities said.

Stanley Brooks, 65, shot Gregory Brooks, 66, in a home in the 1800 block of Pryor Street on April 13 before a two-hour standoff with police, officials said at the time. Gregory Brooks was able to get out of the house, and emergency responders took him to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center as the standoff with his brother started.

McLennan County Justice of the Peace Walter H. “Pete” Peterson pronounced Gregory Brooks dead at the hospital late Wednesday night. Peterson ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Police were called to the brothers' home after they were involved in a disturbance earlier that night. During the fight, Stanley Brooks shot his brother in the torso, police said.

Stanley Brooks remained in the house for about two hours as police tried to convince him to come outside. Police called for assistance from Waco fire and the SWAT team as Stanley Brooks remained inside.

Officers were eventually able to talk Stanley Brooks out of the home with the help of a family member. He was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries he sustained during the fight with his brother, police said at the time.

Stanley Brooks was arrested on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He remained in custody Thursday with no bond amount listed on jail records.

Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said police are awaiting autopsy results in the ongoing investigation. He said it is too early to determine whether Gregory Brooks' death will be ruled a homicide.
