A 29-year-old Mexia man was arrested over the weekend for sexually assaulting and choking a woman while he was intoxicated, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

Dennis Wayne Mackey was arrested by Waco police after they were called to a South Waco apartment complex at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Swanton said a woman said she was sexually assaulted and choked by Mackey, a known acquaintance, earlier in the night.

When police arrived at the apartment complex, Mackey was trying to leave in his car, Swanton said. Officers were able to stop Mackey, who appeared intoxicated, and arrested him without incident.

Mackey was arrested on a first-degree felony charge of aggravated sexual assault, a third-degree felony charge of assault with strangulation and a Class C misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. He was taken to McLennan County Jail, where he remained Monday afternoon with a bond listed at $121,000.
