Waco police are investigating a Sunday night incident in which a 47-year-old man was seriously injured while trying to cross Valley Mills Drive on foot.

Lester James suffered what police are describing as life-threatening injuries after he was struck by a Chevrolet Avalanche about 7:45 p.m. while trying to cross the street in the 800 block of North Valley Mills Drive, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

The vehicle, driven by a male driver, was traveling south on Valley Mills Drive and James walked in front of the vehicle, Swanton said.

James was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and portions of Valley Mills Drive were shut down for several hours during the police investigation, Swanton said.

Swanton said "early indications" are that the driver was not at fault, but the investigation is ongoing.
