Police have identified the man who died in a head-on collision near Bosque Boulevard and Fish Pond Road late Thursday night.

Matthew Nicholas Barrera, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene of the two-vehicle crash, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said Saturday morning. Police were called to the intersection at about 11 p.m. Swanton said Barrera, the driver of a 2011 Toyota Tacoma, was westbound in the 6600 block of Bosque Boulevard when he crossed into oncoming traffic and struck an eastbound 2003 Chevy Tahoe.

The driver of the Tahoe suffered injuries that were not life threatening and was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center. Police did not release the identity of the driver of the Tahoe.

Witnesses told police the Tacoma appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash, Swanton said. The crash remains under investigation.
