The Highway 6 access road was closed near Bagby Avenue on Friday night after a construction crew ruptured a gas line while working in the area, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said in a press release.

The natural gas line was broken at about 6:30 p.m. Waco police and fire and Atmos Energy were called to the intersection. They evacuated businesses in the area and have temporarily closed the westbound Highway 6 access road and the Bagby Avenue overpass, Swanton said.

Police said several of the neighboring businesses were already closed for the day. They are asking drivers to avoid the area until the damaged line and be shut down and traffic can be reopened.

Natural gas was reportedly coming up through water and sewer lines.

There was no immediate estimate for when the roads would be reopened.
