Two people were killed in a one-vehicle crash shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday in the 2400 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
Stephanie Perez, 22, of Garland, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a passenger in a 2003 Ford Mustang driven by Eric Wardell, 28, who died later at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, Waco Police Sgt. Steve Anderson said.
Dustin Wardell, 22, a front-seat passenger, also was taken to Hillcrest with life-threatening injuries, Anderson said, but hospital authorities would not release any information about him late Saturday.
The relationship between Eric and Dustin Wardell was not reported, but Anderson said the two are from the Robinson or Lorena area.
Anderson said the car was traveling north on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at “a high rate of speed” when Eric Wardell lost control.
“The Mustang traveled approximately 150 yards through the ditch before crashing into a tree and catching fire,” he said.
It was unclear if either of the Wardells or the Garland woman were wearing seatbelts.
