Pavement on the overpass spanning University Parks Drive failed early Wednesday morning on northbound Interstate 35 after a wreck involving an 18-wheeler, officials said.

Police responded around 3:15 a.m. on a report of a hole in the roadway over University Parks Drive, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said. He said some vehicles sustained tire damage.

Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Ken Roberts said a piece of asphalt fell from the highway to the ground, creating a hole in the bridge. The right and center lanes of traffic heading northbound were shut down until the hole was patched.
