A 29-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning after a disturbance escalated into a physical confrontation with an elderly family member, Waco police Officer Garen Bynum said.

Joseph Scott Howard, of Waco, was arrested after police were called to a home in the 2700 block of Gurley Avenue shortly after midnight when an elderly woman had reportedly been assaulted. Bynum said the woman, who is over the age of 65, told police she and Howard had been involved in a verbal altercation before Howard assaulted her.

Bynum said the woman told Howard he could not stay at the house, causing Howard to get upset. The verbal argument then turned physical.

The woman was not seriously injured and did not require emergency medical attention, Bynum said. After the alleged assault, Howard left the home on foot, but police found him a short time later near South 27th Street and Park Avenue.

“Howard was intoxicated when officers found him and he was believed to be intoxicated at the time of the assault,” Bynum said.

Police arrested Howard on a third-degree felony charge of injury to the elderly/family violence. He was taken to McLennan County Jail, where he remained Monday afternoon with a bond listed at $15,000.
