A Hewitt man remains in the McLennan County Jail after he allegedly fled a police traffic stop with a child in tow and then attempted to hide in a wooded area behind the Regal Jewel 16 movie theater.

The incident began in the early evening Wednesday when a Waco police officer made a traffic stop at Imperial Drive and Loop 340, Waco Police Department spokesman Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said. After the officer made initial contact with the driver, later identified as 36-year-old Troy James Douglas, he fled in his vehicle, Swanton said.

By the time the officer caught up to Douglas’ vehicle, he had crashed into a culvert near the theater, which is located off U.S. Highway 84 in Woodway, Swanton said. Witnesses told the officer that after the crash, a man carried a child from the car and fled into a wooded area near the theater. Officers set up a perimeter and eventually located them, he said.

Neither Douglas nor the child was injured, Swanton said. He did not immediately have information’s about the child’s age or sex.

Police later learned Texas Child Protective Services had been looking for Douglas, a woman he is in a relationship with and their two children, Swanton said. The agency is seeking to remove the children from the home, which may be why Douglas fled police, Swanton said.

The child found with Douglas is now in CPS custody, Swanton said. Officials continue to look for the other child and the mother, he said.

Douglas was charged with evading arrest and endangering a child. Bond has been set at $5,000 on each charge, a jail spokesman said.
