An elderly woman died after she was hit by a pickup as she walked across Valley Mills Drive on Wednesday afternoon, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

The woman was hit in the 500 block of Valley Mills, in the area of Poppa Rollo’s Pizza, at about 3:30 p.m. Police believe a vehicle driving southeast on Valley Mills had slowed to let the woman cross, and the pickup drove around the slowed vehicle, not realizing the woman was crossing, Swanton said.

“The investigation is still ongoing, but at least, right now, it looks like it is a terrible accident,” he said.

The woman was not in a crosswalk when she was hit, Swanton said. She was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center before she died.

The driver of the blue Chevrolet pickup was cooperating with police, Swanton said.

Waco police and firefighters diverted traffic headed southeast on Valley Mills at Sanger Avenue. Traffic headed northwest was being allowed to pass slowly before police reopened the roadway a couple of hours later.

Police did not immediately release the name of the woman killed.
