One person died after an exchange of gunfire with McLennan County sheriff’s deputies Saturday afternoon on U.S. Business Highway 77 north of Waco.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Matt Cawthon said deputies were trying to pull over a vehicle for a suspected traffic violation as it traveled southbound on U.S. Business Highway 77 close to Bellmead. The driver would not stop, although high speeds were not involved, he said.

When the vehicle finally stopped near the Marlin Highway about 4:30 p.m., there was an exchange of gunfire. One person was fatally shot, Cawthon said. No one else was injured, although one of the vehicles collided with a gasoline truck, he said.

It was not immediately clear whether the deceased person was alone in the vehicle or if the driver was the shooter.

Texas Rangers are investigating the incident. They are routinely called to examine any officer-involved shooting.

“If we’re involved, we want an outside agency to investigate,” Cawthon said.
