Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.

 

 

* Applause *

 

* McLennan County Commissioner Ray Meadows was elected president of the County Judges and Com-missioners Association of Texas, a statewide organization with more than 1,200 members.

Meadows is a former president of the North & East Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association, a sub-region of the state group. Last year Meadows completed a voluntary, 64-hour advanced course on county government.

 

* Class Acts *

 

Emily Leek, 17, a junior at Midway High School, recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award for her work on “Project KCF.” Emily volunteered at the Klaras Center for Families by categorizing materials in the resource room, such as toiletries, bedding and clothes. The facility serves children and adolescents in a six-county area.

Emily also planned and created the healthy relationships badge, where Junior Girl Scouts learn the importance of their involvement in Girl Scouts. She is the daughter of William and Chiquita Leek.

Kyle Kattner of Lorena, a senior civil engineering major at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, was named to the dean’s list for the fall semester. For the last three years he has received a scholarship from the local Association of General Contractors.

Melissa Frazer of Waco was named to the dean’s honor roll at Midwestern State University in Plainview for the fall semester.

 

* In the Military *

 

Austin Adams, a 2005 graduate from Valley Mills High School, was promoted to the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during a Nov. 5 ceremony in New Orleans. He has been in the Marines since 2006.

He is the son of Jeff and Rebecca Nickell and James and Elaine Adams.

* Army Reserve Sgt. Clinton W. Dickey, a 2005 graduate of Waco High School, has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dickey, a psychological operations specialist assigned to the 345th Psychological Operations Company in Dallas, has five years of military service.

* Air Force Airman Sean C. Kirby, a 2009 graduate of Gatesville High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

He is the son of Toye Grimes of Moody and Dale Kirby of Celina.

* Army Pvt. Cody J. Wolfe, a 2009 graduate of Riesel High School, graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Systems specialist advanced individual training course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

He is the son of James Wolfe of West and Rose Neilson of Riesel.
