Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.
* Applause *
* James “Jake” Burson (right), a 1996 graduate of McGregor High School, was inducted as a member of the Texas Rangers law enforcement organization.
He is the son of James Burson and Maxine Burson of McGregor.
He is based in Fort Stockton and is a member of Texas Rangers Company E.
* Jason Kirk, a Farmers Insurance agent in Waco, completed the Insurance Agent Career Accelerator Course at the University of Farmers in Agoura Hills, Calif.
* Class Acts *
* H.G. Isbill Junior High eighth-grader Adrian Bourassa (right) in McGregor won the Patriot’s Pen award presented by Dawson-Connally VFW Post 7995.
The award is presented to the student who submits the best patriotic essay. Post Commander Manuel Nelson presented Adrian with a certificate and cash award.
* Jordan Hooten of Robinson graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio in December with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.
* The Baylor Democrats was named the “Chapter of the Year” from the Texas College Democrats at the annual Young Democrats of Texas Convention this spring.
The award is given to the chapter that best represents the ideals and mission statement of the Texas Democratic Party, and excels in providing a true Democratic presence at their university.
* In the Military *
* Airman Warren L. McKamey (right), a 2007 graduate of Connally High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is the son of Warren and Lee Ann McKamey of Waco.
* Army Spc. Alphonso N. Thomas II, the son of Evelyn Christian of Waco, has returned from a one-year tour in Afghanistan and will be stationed at Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. He is in the 25th Infantry Division.
* Army Spc. Robert E. Crow, a 1995 graduate of Midway High, was awarded a Certificate of Achievement for performing and accomplishing assigned duties in a commendable manner and for demonstrating skill and initiative in devising and improving work methods and procedures. He is the son of Douglas W. and Sharon K. Crow of Waco.
* Pitching In *
* McGregor Elementary first-graders presented the Cameron Park Zoo with a check for $400 in April. The money was donated to assist the zoo in renovating its Ranch House.
Every year since 1996 the first-grade class at McGregor raises money for the zoo. To date, those classes have donated more than $4,800.
* Students and employees from McLennan Community College had three teams for the 2010 Komen Central Texas Race for the Cure in Waco and raised more than $1,600 — the fifth-largest amount by any company.
Lizzie Warren, a student on the MCC Nursing Student Association team, was the top fundraiser with $250.
