Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.
* Applause *
* Rob Fleming, principal at West Elementary in West, was named the Association of Texas Professional Educator’s Administrator of the Year at its annual convention.
Fleming has been in education for 19 years. He was in Waco ISD for 16 years before coming to West ISD.
Fleming held positions as a classroom teacher, an instructional specialist, assistant principal and a principal during his career in education.
* Class Acts *
* The Crawford High School One-Act Play was selected as the alternate play to the regional contest. The group advanced from the zone and district contests to the area level. Several students were honored at each contest.
Area: Tyler Christensen, Best Actor; Paige Baize and Beth Harris, All-Star Cast; Ashton McMullen, honorable mention All-Star Cast.
District: Tyler Christensen, Best Actor; Paige Baize and Ashley Dehm, All-Star Cast; Beth Harris, honorable mention All-Star Cast; Paige Bukowski, All-Star Crew.
Zone: Paige Baize and Tyler Christensen, All-Star Cast; Beth Harris and Ashley Dehm, honorable mention All-Star Cast.
* The Midway High School Sinfonia Orchestra earned a Sweepstakes Award (superior ratings in concert and sight-reading) at its University Interscholastic League Concert and Sight-reading Contest in March.
Judges commented on the maturity of the group’s sound and its insistence on precision and accuracy.
Members of the MHS Philharmonic Orchestra also earned a Sweepstakes Award at its UIL Concert and Sight-reading Contest. Judges commented on their professional tone, highly mature musicianship, and insistence on precision and accuracy.
* In the Military *
* Air Force Airman Jon B. Key (right), a 2009 graduate of Oglesby High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is the son of John Key of Crawford.
* Army Pvt. Christopher A. Leffert, a 2005 graduate of China Spring High School, graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Data Systems Specialist Advanced Individual Training Course at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla. He is the son of Carol and Charles Leffert of China Spring.
* Pitching In *
* Approximately 230 Speegleville Elementary students participated in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk for Diabetes and raised $11,051.
Students walked for an entire hour around the Speegleville track. The second-grade classes raised a total of $4,462 and won a pizza party. Jake Johnson (left) and Evan Cole (right) were the top two individual fundraisers, collecting $1,891 and $1,055, respectively.
The school beat last year’s fundraising total and every student was treated to an ice cream sandwich provided by the H-E-B grocery store in Corsicana.
