Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.
* Applause *
* McLennan County Treasurer Bill Helton (right) has been nominated for the 2010 Texas Outstanding County Treasurer Award by the County Treasurers’ Association of Texas.
The award is based on performance as county treasurer, civic duties and service to the association. Helton was elected in 1990 and began serving his first four-year term as McLennan County treasurer in 1991.
He has served in all of the association’s officer positions, including president in 2001-02. The Texas Outstanding County Treasurer winner will be selected by popular vote of the state’s 245 county treasurers in September.
* Class Acts *
* McLennan Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, brought home two awards from the 92nd Annual Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Orlando, Fla.
Reynaldo Rangel, MCC’s scholarship team leader, was one of 30 students out of the United States and seven countries to receive the Distinguished Chapter Officer Award.
The chapter also was recognized with the Leadership Hallmark Award.
* Daniel Stephen Mitchell of Lorena graduated from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville with a Bachelor of the Arts in history.
* Ronnie Scott Smith of Groesbeck earned an associate in science in nursing degree from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y.
* Alfonso Saldana of Waco graduated from the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in Odessa with an online bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
* Jeffrey Van Treuren of Waco, a mechanical engineering major at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., made the dean’s list for the 2009-10 winter quarter. He is the son of Renee and Kenneth Van Treuren of Waco.
* Students who made the fall dean’s list at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville were Lauren Renee Hartz of Robinson; Weston Evans Glaser of Lorena; and Whitney L. Coulter, Hayley S. Holecek and Gabrielle R. Moore, all of Waco.
Hartz and Holecek were named to the president’s honor roll.
* In the Military *
* Army Pfc. Andrew S. Rynearson, a 2008 graduate of Midway High, has returned to Fort Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, after a year’s deployment in Afghanistan. He is the son of Linda R. and Stephen Rynearson of Hewitt.
* Air Force Staff Sgt. Katie M. Gutierrez, a 2003 graduate of McGregor High School, has deployed to Southeast Asia with the 380th Air Expeditionary Wing. She is the daughter of Julie M. Metcalfe of McGregor and Salome Gutierrez Jr. of Midland.
* Airman 1st Class Phillip K. Shepherd of Woodway, a 2009 graduate of Midway High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is the son of Lisa Long of Woodway and Chris Shepherd of Lubbock.
* Army Reserve Pfc. Brandon L. Thompson graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. He is the son of Brenda Thompson of Lorena.
