Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.
* Class Acts *
* LeJewelia Lewis, co-captain of the Prairie View A&M University bowling team, received the Cleoda Bables Scholarship from the Omicron Upsilon Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity for the 2008-09 academic year.
A 2008 Waco High School graduate, she was honored as Freshman Bowler of the Year in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and won three Most Valuable Player honors at tournaments while making the dean’s list.
She is the daughter of Missy and James Lewis Jr. and the granddaughter of Charlene and Dr. James Lewis Sr. and the late Doris Henley.
* Thirteen high school and studio dance teams competed at the 34th annual dance contest held by the MCC Dance Company at McLennan Community College.
The officer teams from McGregor, China Spring, Killeen Shoemaker and Joshua received Division I trophies.
In team routines, Division I trophies went to McGregor, Gatesville, China Spring Dance Academy, Let’s Dance McGregor, Whitney, Shoemaker and Joshua. Division II trophies went to Bruceville-Eddy, China Spring, Moody and West.
Samantha and Corina Hueske of Let’s Dance McGregor received a Division 1 ribbon for their duet.
Local solo dancers getting a Division I medal were Corina Hueske, Samantha Hueske, Megan Kevil, Sydney Kasting, and Jacey Scranton from Let’s Dance McGregor; Andrea Prikyrl from China Spring; Brooke Shultz and Lydia West from Gatesville; Hope Harris, Taylor Cox, Carolyn Hoeffner, Courtney Leinfelder, Lisa Contreras, Emily Boon, Sarah Langley and Grace Riehl from Midway.
In the ninth- and 10th-grade solo division, Makenzie Mills of Midway won first place, Brittany Bratcher of Midway placed second, and Kaylee Allen of China Spring took third. In the 11th- and 12-grade division, Molly McGrew of Midway won first place for the second year in a row, Kitty DeLeon of Midway placed second, Chenelle John Lewis was third as an independent dancer, and Bri Norwood of Midway was fourth.

* The Rev. Gilbert Gillum Jr., senior pastor of the Living Word Church of God in Christ of Waco, is the Citizen of the Month for March by the Cen-Tex African American Chamber of Commerce.
A native of Kiln, Miss., he served 12 years in the U.S. Army and then received his bachelor of arts degree in religion at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton.
He also studied at the Institute of Teaching God’s Word Theological Seminary and received his Ph.D. from Prairie Bible College in Alberta, Canada.
He is active in the community and serves on several local boards. He and his wife, Louise, have three children.
