Talk of the Neighborhood: Local achievements and honors for Oct. 3, 2010
Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.
* Class Acts *
* Eight area high school seniors were recognized as semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
They are: Sarah Frazier and Michael Martin of China Spring High School; Austin Lane, a homeschooled student from Mexia; Jackson Harris and William Morrow of Midway High School; Dallas Atchley and Ewan Hamilton-Short of Vanguard College Preparatory School in Waco; and Justin Miller of Whitney High School.
They are among approximately 16,000 students nationwide selected by their scores in the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation releases the list of semifinalists. Students named as Commended Scholars are released by the school districts.
* Judith Scrivner of Waco graduated from Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kan., at the end of the spring semester with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in management and human resources.
* Eric Rowell, a China Spring High School graduate, was named to the president’s list for the spring semester at the University of North Texas in Denton. He is a senior computer science major.
* Applause *
* Dr. Robert M. Wright Jr., a Waco plastic surgeon for 27 years, was re-elected to a three-year term on the Texas Medical Association Council on health service organizations. The council makes recommendations and initiates activities related to the organization and services of all facilities in health-care services.
Wright is a member of the McLennan County Medical Society.


* In the Military *
* Air Force Airman Alexander M. Hedgecock (right, top), a 2009 graduate of Robinson High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is the son of Julie Swaner of Robinson.
* Army Pfc. James D. Egdami, the son of Evangeline and stepson of Jonathan Trayler of Lorena, has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga.
* Air Force Airman Daniel T. Howard (right, bottom), a 2007 graduate of Midway High School, graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. He is the son of Ivette and Gregory Howard of Hewitt.
* Pitching In *
* H-E-B officials presented a $5,000 check to Caritas of Waco at the KWTX-TV News 10 station on Sept. 15 as a result of a tear-pad campaign this summer.
Tear-off coupons in the amounts of $1, $3 and $5 were located at checkout stands in H-E-B grocery stores, where customers could add the desired donation amount to their grocery bill. More than 3,164 pounds of food will be made available to Waco families, according to a release.
H-E-B customers raised $322,500, which will benefit 15 food banks in Texas.
